Finding background on a legal topic

When beginning research on a legal topic, one of the first sources that is consulted is law reviews.  Use law reviews both to identify background information on a topic and to identify key cases, regulations, or legislation for your topic.  To access law reviews in LexisNexis Academic:

(1)    Click on the legal tab at the top
(2)    Select “law reviews” on the side
(3)    Select sources, if needed
(4)    Enter relevant information (in search terms box, consider using terms and connectors for more sophisticated searching)
 

Finding cases

To find legal cases from LexisNexis Academic:

(1)    Click on the legal tab at the top
(2)    Select “federal & state cases” on the side
(3)    Select sources, if needed
(4)    Enter relevant information (in search terms box, consider using terms and connectors for more sophisticated searching)
 

Finding federal & state code

To find information from federal and state codes in LexisNexis Academic:

(1)    Click on the legal tab at the top
(2)    Select “federal & state codes” on the side
(3)    Select sources, if needed
(4)    Enter relevant information (in search terms box, consider using terms and connectors for more sophisticated searching)

 

 

Verifying the validity of a case

Shepardizing allows the legal researcher to ensure that a case is still considered "good law," i.e., that the case has not been in some way overturned or limited by a later case.  To Shepardize a case in LexisNexis Academic:

(1)    Click on the legal tab at the top
(2)    Select “Shepard’s Citations” on the side
(3)    Enter citation
