Keep Current in Your Field

Too much to do, too little time. In a 1997 research study, Dr. David Sackett reported that a doctor of general medicine would need to read 19 primary research articles per day, 365 days per year, to keep current with medical advances in the field. Clearly, this is not possible. Keeping current with advances in your field is one of the most difficult aspects of a career in health care. How can you try to stay abreast of what's happening? Try journal alerts.

Sacket, D. L. (1997). Surveys of self-reported reading times of consultants in Oxford, Birmingham, Milton-Keynes, Bristol, Leicester, and Glasgow. In W. M. C. Rosenberg, W. S. Richardson, R. B. Haynes, & D. L. Sackett (Eds.), Evidence-based medicine. London, United Kingdom: Churchill Livingstone.

Journal Alerts

Find five to ten journals that are important to your field and sign up for email alerts. With an email alert, as each new issue of a journal is published, the table of contents for the issue will automatically be sent to your email. Scan the titles and abstracts just to see what new research is being completed in your area and request the articles that are really important to what you do. It is a great way to stay current and on the cutting edge of hot topics in nursing research!
