Understanding the Organizational System

How are scripts organized on the shelf?

  • Like other printed library resources, scripts are organized on the shelf in Michener Library by call number.
  • Michener Library uses the Library of Congress system for call numbers, which are a combination of letters and numbers with every call number starting with one or two letters.
  • Scripts are typically in the P section, which is on the third floor of the library.
  • Look at the end of each shelf row to determine if the call number for your script is on that shelf.

Finding Playscripts

Use this video as a step-by-step guide to searching for and finding scripts in Michener Library.

How to find a script on the shelf:

  1. Go to the library home page and choose the Catalog tab on the search box.
  2. Look up the script you want to use by the author or by the name of the play or both.
  3. Note the call number of the play by writing it down or by creating a screenshot or by keeping the entry open on your phone or laptop.
  4. Look at the call number range on the end of the bookshelf to determine if the call number for the play script is on that bookshelf. Remember that play scripts are typically in the P section and that the P section is on the third floor.
  5. Once you find the correct bookshelf, search the stickers on the books for the first two letters of your call number, then search for the first four digits after those letters. NOTE: For scripts, this call number sticker might be on the front cover and not the spine of the book!
  6. Continue working your way through the call number of the script until you find the script on the shelf.
  7. If the catalog says that the script is on the shelf and it is not on the shelf, double-check the call number first, and then check the book carts to see if it is there instead.
  8. If the catalog says it is on shelf and you cannot find it on the shelf or on a cart, please visit the front desk for help!
