The Mural

Centro de Educación de Aztlán is a mural by UNC alum, Brenda Vargas and was created in 2023 with support from the University Libraries and the UNC Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

The mural and the Chicana/o Latinx Studies Community Space were created from the belief that for students to develop an academic identity, essential aspects such as space, culturally relevant resources, and imagery are necessary to inspire, educate, and retain students. Just as Aztlán is the homeland for many Chicana/o and Latinx-identifying students, the space is meant to serve as a home specific to an academic space.

The Artist

Brenda Vargas is a first-generation Chicana/Mexicana born and raised in Denver, Colorado. Her family roots trace back to Mexico City, which she considers the birthplace of her passion for art, activism, and community.
