Dearfield: Wade A. Jones

Biography

Dr. Wade Anthony Jones, was born in Mardisville, Alabama in 1874 to parents Wade and Flora Jones. He attended Tuskegee University, a historically Black-university that Booker T. Washington was the first principal of, before moving to Denver and finishing his medical schooling at Denver University in 1899. Sometime before 1910 Wade had married and divorced once, but he remarried in June 1912 to Alberta Vaughn. He worked as a general practicing physician in Denver. After establishing a claim near the lake, and building a home, he acted often as the physician for the whole community around Dearfield, White as well as Black folk. He also donated some of his land to function as the town cemetery.
