Researchers at CU Boulder's Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) found that Weld County's oil & gas wells contribute fuel for ozone pollution; average levels of propane were found to be higher than values reported for 28 U.S. cities, such as Houston, TX, and Pasadena, CA.

This peer-reviewed article in the journal "Climatic Change" by Robert Howarth concluded that drilling for shale gas could be worse than coal mining when it came to greenhouse gas emissions.
