The Nelson Memo
Federal Funding and the Open Access Mandate

Register for Workshop

In August of 2022, the United States’ White House Office of Science and Technology (OSTP) released a memorandum on public access of federally funded research. This is known as the Nelson Memo, and it outlines the new requirements for faculty and students who conduct research that is federally funded. New policies require free, immediate, and equitable access to research and data. While new policies may not become effective until December 31, 2024, many research projects are multi-year and researchers need to consider how this change in policy will change their publication venue choices and data plans. Join us for a conversation on the important points of the Nelson Memo and what new considerations researchers and scholars must contemplate.

Value Beyond Cost Savings
Unlocking Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with Open Educational Resources

Register for Workshop

The cost savings offered by the use of Open Educational Resources (OER) have garnered significant attention. As free teaching, learning, and research materials, OER reduce financial barriers to education by eliminating textbook costs. However, fewer people are aware that OER also contribute to a more inclusive learning environment. This session will explore the value of OER beyond financial benefits, delving into how OER, as free and accessible resources, play a crucial role in building an inclusive educational landscape. From embracing diverse perspectives in content creation to providing the opportunity to tailor course materials to students’ specific needs, we will uncover the many ways that OER can contribute to equity in education.

Researcher Profiles and IDs
Taking Control of Your Online Identity

Register for Workshop

Researcher profiles and unique identifiers increase your visibility as a scholar and creator while differentiating your work from the work of others. It is becoming commonplace for publishers and funders to require the use of certain identifiers and for some profiles, such as Google Scholar, to be automatically generated for you. It is important to intentionally manage your online presence so that your work is accurately represented and to promote your research, showcase your achievements, and attract collaborators and funders. This session will review different types of researcher profiles and identifiers and help attendees establish a realistic strategy for managing their scholarly identity online.

Journal Selection
Choosing Where to Publish

Cancelled:

Unfortunately, this workshop has been cancelled. Please check back in future semesters for similar opportunities!

Choosing a journal to publish in should be based on factors that align with a researcher’s goals and values. There are considerations of a journal’s visibility, impact, audience, and prestige. Ethical concerns of access, publication fees, and the peer-review process are additional factors authors may contemplate, along with copyright retainment and publishing timeframes. Scholars must focus on what they determine to be important and then collect the information they seek to make a selection from the nearly 47,000 journals in existence. In this session attendees will contemplate journal selection criteria that are most important – practically, professionally, and ethically – and learn where to find the information that will assist in their journal choice.
