In May 1967, UNC students went down to the state capital to protest potential cuts to the higher education budget proposed by the state legislature. It was just one to the protests that students participated in during the riotous 1960s and 1970s.
During the 1960-70s, the campus community began to reflect the growing activism that was spreading across the nation. The Chicano Movement, the Vietnam War, the American Indian Movement along with the Black Power Movement were all topics for discussion. Corky Gonzales, Jane Fonda, Ray "Masi" Hewitt, and Vernon Bellecourt were just a few of the well-known speakers brought to the campus to talk about the topics of the day.
