President Zachariah X. Snyder, 1891-1915

Elizabeth Hays Kendel began her career at the State Normal School as an assistant in the Training School in 1893, three years later she was hired on as a teacher. She retired in 1943 as an Associate Professor Emerita of Mathematics.

Donald Gilmore Decker, faculty and administration 1937-1973, Professor and Dean of Science Education and University Provost, and Forrest Willard Frease, faculty 1948-1980, Professor of English and Dean of Arts and Science.

John W. Hancock Jr., faculty and coach 1928-1966, retired Professor Emeritus of Physical Education, and Professor Lonis C. ‘Pete’ Butler, faculty and coach 1931-1973, Professor of Physical Education and Dean of the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.

Donald G. Decker and his wife Doris. Donald Decker held many positions at the school including dean of science education and provost. Doris L. Decker was an assistant professor of education and teacher at the training school.

Howard M. Skinner, faculty 1964-2004, retired as Professor of Music and served as Dean of Performing and Visual Arts 1986-1992, interim President 1996-1998.

Oliver Dickerson, faculty 1923-1941, Professor Emeritus of History and Political Science and Chairman Social Science, and Daniel Seager, Head Librarian and Associate Professor of Library Science, 1956-1984.

Bella Bruce Sibley, teacher at the training school 1900-1924.

Walter Stewart, Professor Emeritus of Journalism and Mss Communications, 1968-1984.

Joyce B. Washington, Assistant Director of the UNC Counseling Center and Staff Psychologist.

William Duff, Professor of Statistics at the College of Business Administration and served as Dean of the College of Business Administration from 1985-1994.

George A. Tate, faculty 1974-1987, Professor Emeritus of Professional Psychology.

Margaret Joy Keys, Associate Professor of Physical Education, 1914-1929.

Genevieve Lawrenson, Dining Hall manager in Tobey-Kendel Dining Hall from 1939-1972.

Rita Hutchenson, professor of music, works with students John Sutherland and Val Underwood on a piano piece.

H. Merle Parsons, Superintendent of Grounds 1949-1960. Parson Hall was named in his honor.

Prior to his successful writing career, James A. Michener was working as a social studies teacher. He received his M.A. in Secondary Education in 1937 at CSC and taught at the progressive College High from 1936 to 1941.

Annie Margaret McCowen, faculty 1921-1958, Professor Emeritus of Elementary Education. McCowen Residence Hall was dedicated in the fall of 1963, it was the first year that residence halls were coed.

Esther Lotz received a bachelor’s degree from Colorado State College of Education in 1943 and a life teaching certificate. She served as secretary in the physical education department, in the division of health until she retired in 1963.

Carlos Leal, faculty 1969-1998, Director of Upward Bound at UNC and Professor Emeritus of Hispanic Studies.

Paul McKee, Professor of Elementary Education, Principal and teacher at the Lab School, 1926-1962.

Grace Napier, faculty 1966-1986, Professor of Special Education.

Ralph T. Bishop, faculty 1919-1955, Professor Emeritus of Industrial Arts.

Courtney Willis, Professor Emeritus of Physics and 2009 recipient of the M. Lucile Harrison Award. The annul award recognizes a faculty member with a distinguished career in teaching, professional activity and service.

Henry T. Ginsburg, faculty 1931-1958, Professor of Music.

Richard S. ‘Dik’ Munson, faculty 1975-2002, Professor of Art and Chair of the Visual Arts Department.

John Leslie Dietz, faculty 1967-2001, Professor Emeritus of Geography.

Robert C. Dickeson, University President 1981-1991.

Robert B. Turner, faculty 1973-1996, Professor of Visual Arts.

Barbara H. Mickey, Professor of Anthropology and Chairperson for the Departments of Anthropology, Black Studies and Women’s Studies.
